The one thing they don't teach you in music school is: have fun.
I am an absurdly educated musician - I've been playing viola for over two decades, piano for nearly as long; I've been writing classical music since I started playing piano and I started working with music technology shortly after that. I comfortably read treble, alto, and bass clef, feel confident writing and arranging in a variety of genres, I play viola and piano, I can write, freestyle, and perform rap, I've written a little for animation and a lot for games, and I have written not one but TWO metal tracks - with guitars!!! I don't even play guitar!!!!
and yet I messed up the end of this piece at the piano
and I was mortified
Studying classical music, and playing strings especially, teaches you to be perfect. Every note that's even a little out of tune is an opportunity for growth. Improvement. Perfection. Any slip of the finger, anything that's slightly out of time, every single part of the tune can be optimized and re-optimized. It's a wonder it hasn't driven me mad.
I'm grateful for it, don't get me wrong - the discipline that I've brought to my classical studies is the same that I apply to everything I do, even my explicit and inappropriate parody rap (which you may never hear) but I think, sometimes, between all of the deadlines and responsibility, it can be hard to remember to enjoy it.
so I've been enjoying it more lately. playing more games. writing more little funny raps. recapturing more of the play in my work. can't recommend it more.
p.s.: I was only slightly mortified. (nobody noticed 😉)
