I was feeling like my grasp of harmony is weak, so I challenged myself to write a piece with chords only, "no melody." (It's a little silly as an idea, but I think I got the point across)
It was neat to spend time in the emotional space created by chords like these - I realized that a lot of the music that I get hired to write doesn't call for the kind of tone generated by, say, jazz chords with a ton of tensions (which I tend to associate with a "strong" approach to harmony)
It was a productive exercise! It got me thinking more about harmony in general and approaching chords the way I used to (I have a tendency to think in stacked triads vs thinking about my 9s/11s/13s) - and it led me right into writing another tune that I'll share in the coming weeks. Or months. who know
